Dr Matt Lawson is a British musicologist, screen music specialist, and Senior Lecturer in Music at Oxford Brookes University, where he also serves as the Subject Coordinator for BA Music and BA Digital Media Production and Marketing. He joined the institution in September 2017 and has built a reputation for bridging the gap between rigorous academic musicology and public education.
Matt’s educational roots began in the north of England. He completed his undergraduate honours degree in Music at the University of Huddersfield in 2009, followed by an MA with distinction from the University of York in 2012.
He was awarded his PhD from Edge Hill University in 2017. His doctoral thesis focused heavily on the ethics and impact of screen music, specifically analysing the musical scores used in German on-screen depictions of the Holocaust. His research in this area was highly collaborative internationally, supported by a European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) Fellowship in Munich and a Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) grant to study historical resources in Germany.
