His doctoral research specialised in historical memory and media, examining the use of music in German depictions of the Holocaust on screen, alongside a broader interest in how music represents trauma and identity. Additionally, his work explores the history and impact of cinema soundtracks, co-authoring the book 100 Greatest Film Scores, as well as the use of music in popular media and cult comedies.
